Top 32: Piran Asci (Infernities) vs. Gabriele Corradino (Bujin)

27.04.2014 | 15:03 |

647 players showed up for YCS Paris and after 10 rounds of Swiss spread over 2 days, we’ve now made it all the way to the Top 32. Here, we’ll now look over the shoulder of Piran Asci, running Infernities as well as Gabriele Corradino, one of the remaining Bujin Duelists.[nbsp]
Asci won the die roll and he opted to go first. He had trouble focusing since the judge asked him to place his Deck to the bottom right. Apparently not a single Duelist that was sitting on the Feature Match table this weekend ever got that right.

Asci kicked things off with [tinfish] and [arma]. This got him [heiress] in his Grave and he added [a roar] to his hand. “I need a [106]”, Asci explained. He couldn’t quite decide what to Xyz Summon them, first thinking about going with [66], but then instead deciding on [dweller].

“No Yamato!”, Asci said. Apparently he knew what Corradino was up to. [bujin hare] got summoned and it attacked into [dweller]. “500 damage?”, Asci asked. Corradino then realized what happened. He was conversing in Italian, he set 2 and passed play. Asci had just sold him on the idea that he didn’t quite know what he was doing when in fact he was just toying with his opponent, leading him down the wrong path! Corradino’s [bujin hare] ended up in the wrong rabbit hole which in this situation translates to “the Graveyard”.

Asci used [night beam] to destroy a [tthn]. He then went on and [ss]ed [lchain].

A second copy of the Trap stopped [lchain]. Asci now went for [inf archfiend] while Corradino was still mumbling, beating himself up about his earlier mistake. The German added [barrier] to his hand. Attacks followed, he set the [barrier] and ended.

[duality] revealed [mst], [bujin quil] and [ff tenki]. [hole] was next, causing Asci to think long and hard about his response. He went through the next series of plays in his head and eventually decided to detach an Xyz Material from [dweller] before he lost his field.
[ff tenki] got activated then, netting Corradino [bujin yam] from his Deck. He [ns]ed it and activated its effect, with play proceeding to the End Phase. This got him a [bujin turtle] in the Graveyard.

Asci activated [upstart] from his back row, drawing a card and increasing Corradino’s Life Points so they were now up on 4500. Asci once again had to think then, going over the options that his Extra Deck provided him with. He then double checked the effect of [bujin turtle] and he went over both Graveyards. That certainly meant he had all the information he needed to make a series of plays.
He played [inf archfiend], he set his last card in hand and he then activated [a roar]. He added a second [inf archfiend] from his Graveyard and he now got to search his Deck for [launcher]. Both monsters were used to [xyz] [ddw] and he used its effect, detaching one of the [inf archfiend][s] and targeting [bujin yam]. [bujin hare] got banished in Corradino’s Graveyard.

[launcher] left the field, returning both [inf archfiend][s]. This got Asci a [necromancer]. He then went for [lchain], [patrol] got banished, returning a [necromancer] and it in turn returned [inf archfiend]. That was a rather big turn.

[pod] got Corradino [ff tenki]. Asci commented: “This is awesome… those 100 points really make all the difference.” Corradino then activated [ff tenki], but [mst] took care of the Spell.
[bujin yam] attacked into [inf archfiend], but a [infbreak] got activated. A [bujin crane] then was supposed to allow [bujin yam] a second attack, but [barrier] made sure that never happened.
Corradino passed, Asci simply pointed with his finger on [lchain] and that’s when the Italian shuffled up.

Gabriele Corradino suffered all of the first Duel from his earlier mistake when Asci showed what he learned when he played against Rodrigo Togores at the YCS Berlin earlier this year.

Corradino then kicked things off with [ff tenki], searching his Deck for [bujin mika]. It got [ns]ed [bujin yam], he added 3 face-down Spell or Trap Cards, [kaiser col] was also activated and [bujin yam] triggered. This meant that [bujin hare] would be sent to the Graveyard.

Asci set a monster and 3 spells or traps. [mst] destroyed [instant fusion].

[pod] then got Corradino another copy of [kaiser col], he summoned [bujin mika] and it attacked over [patrol]. [bujin yam] then dealt first blood, leaving Asci on 6100 Life Points.
In [mp] 2, Corradino, much to the dismay of Asci (and the judge on the table since he didn’t catch the mistake immediately), performed an [xyz]. [susanowo] hit play and it got Corradino another [bujin turtle] in his Graveyard. That was when we realized that [pod] wouldn’t allow the Xyz Summon in the first place.

We had to rewind the game, which was a lot more complicated than you might think since 3 languages were involved. We brought in another judge who had a better mastery of the Italian tongue. So now [bujin mika] and [bujin yam] remained on the field and [bujin yam] triggered, sending [bujin turtle] to Corradino’s Graveyard. [bujin mika] got him [bujincarnation].

Asci checked his opponent’s Graveyard, asking him “You can save one, right?”, referring to the number of options Corradino had available to prevent his monsters from being destroyed.

Asci tried to use [patrol], but Corradino stopped it with [warning]. [dust] then destroyed Corradino’s last set card: [tt]. He was now like an open book for Asci who knew every single card that Corradino had available.
The German flipped [call], bringing back [arma] and sending a [patrol] to Asci’s Graveyard. He banished it, [ss]ing [inf archfiend] from his hand, which then allowed him to search his Deck for [necromancer]. Both monsters on the field were used to [xyz] [eek] and it blew up the board, with [bujin yam] remaining thanks to a [bujin hare] sacrificing itself.

Another [patrol] now allowed Asci to bring back [necromancer]. This got him [inf archfiend]. He searched for [barrier]. He attacked over [eek], [inf archfiend] attacked directly and it was back to Corradino.

Corradino had apparently missed the timing for his 'destiny draw'!

[nbsp]
He drew into [bujin crane]. He thought what he could do with [bujincarnation] and it, but nothing came to fruit. He activated the spell and [barrier] foiled the plan. Corradino was forced to pass.

Asci went crazy; [arma] got summoned, followed by [inf archfiend], which got Asci another [necromancer]. [lchain] followed, [necromancer] came down, this then meant that [leviair] would hit the field, [patrol] returned to the field and that was enough damage on the board to decide the game.
