Top 64 Feature Match: Simon He (Dragon Ruler) vs Marco Grammatica

After 11 rounds of Swiss we’re finally here – the top 64! Four more wins will secure a place representing the continent at the World Championships in Las Vegas in August. Our first feature match of the top cut features the only undefeated Duelist from the Swiss rounds, Simon He, and Italian Duelist Marco Grammatica. One of these would advance to the top 32 – let’s find out who it’ll be!

Grammatica won the dice roll and decided he would be going first. He started things off with [allure], banishing [ev thun]. He Summoned [ev castor] and used his extra Summon to bring a Thunderbird into the fray. Both joined to make an [ophion] and it’s effect fished out a [i pand] from the Deck. Two [st]s gave He his first turn of the match.

He decided to use the effect of [tdrag], discarding [corseca] and seaching [blaster]. He activated [rejuv] and drew to six in his [ep].

Another Castor was [ns]ed for Grammatica. [ev mand] followed and a fist full of attacks left He on 2150. In [mp2] another Ophion joined the party and searched a second Pandemic. A third set concluded the turn.

He drew and used Blaster’s effect to target one of the Ophion. [eev] was chained, calling Spells, and He revealed his hand showing none present. Another Tempest searched a second Blaster and He set a monster before passing.

Grammatica [ns]ed [ev olan] and Ophion attacked over [stream], with O’Lantern dropping He to 500. [lockdown] was activated and when He simply set a Monster, cards were shuffled up in Grammatica’s next turn.

Siding occurred in silence and both players thoroughly shuffled each other’s Deck in preparation of the second game. He was going first, and opened with [tsuku], [tidal], [card d], [lightning], [reactan] and [burner]. Tidal was discarded to Burner’s effect, [ss]ing Blaster from the Deck. Reactan was discarded for Lightning’s effect, allowing Tempest to join the party. Both became a [sack] and tokens were spawned. He motioned that Grammatica could take his turn.

[ev castor] was first, followed by Thunderbird. Both tokens fell victim to attacks, and in [mp2] [i pand] saved both Monsters from [hole], destroying Dracossack in the process. They became an Ophion and it’s effect searched [i infect]. One set card concluded the turn.

He drew and [ns]ed Tsukuyomi, flipping Ophion down – but not before He checked the defence to see what he could potentially use to attack over it later in the turn! Dracossack and Tidal were banished to revive Tempest, plucking a Stream from the Deck. It was discarded to [ss] a Tidal from Deck, and joined with Tempest to become a second Dracossack. When the tokens came, one was destroyed to take out the set Infection, chained to put Thunderbird back in the Deck and take [ev kery]. Blaster [ss]ed itself next and attacks were made, dropping Grammatica to 6900.

Kerykeion was next, adding Castor to the Italian’s hand. It was Summoned and [ev helio] was next. Grammatica considered his options but decided after a short while that no available play would help him out of impending doom next turn, and scooped his cards up to get back in to his Side Deck.

“I’ll go first?” said He, questioning Grammatica.

“I don’t think so, I’ll start” was the reply. A [ns]ed Thunderbird and set [st] was the opening play.

He played [7ss] banishing Tidal to draw two and search Stream. [sarco] was next, banishing Redox and searching a Reactan. Thunderbird’s effect was activated in response. Stream’s effect was next, grabbing a Tidal and discarding a second Tempest. He made a Dracossack and detached Redox to activate the effect. Dracossack tributed itself to destroy a set Pandemic, and Tempest revived itself from the graveyard. Blaster was [ss]ed from the hand. No [ns] had occurred yet so He used [veiler] to [synch] using both of the tokens to Summon [aswyvern] – as soon as he saw it Grammatica offered the handshake, he wouldn’t survive the turn!
