Top 8: Alpay Engin (Mermail) vs. Mattia Graziuso (Fire Fist)

Only 3 more wins! That’s what’s on the minds of Mattia Graziuso and Alpay Engin. They have both come far, even though they’ve taken a very different approach. Engin, one of the most successful Duelists of our time, made it here with Mermails while Graziuso has come this far with Fire Fist. They seemed to be in quite the hurry, so let’s skip the introductions (we got Top 8 Profiles for that, after all) and let’s get right to it.

Engin kicked things off with [a pike], discarding another copy to add [a mark] to his hand. He [ss]ed [a spirit], both monsters were then used to Xyz Summon [bahamut], he detached [a pike], added [atrite], he set 2 back row cards and that concluded the turn.

[tenki] was met with a [mst] so Graziuso wouldn’t get to search his Deck. A [ff gyok] then took care of Engin’s other face-down Spell or Trap, the Italian summoned [myrmeleo] to add [bth] to his hand, he activated [ff tensu], [ns]ed [ff bear] and it allowed him to destroy [atrite]. This meant that [a pike] would return to the field, [a mark] got discarded for its effect and Engin searched his Deck for [a gunde]. [ff bear] attacked over [a pike] and in [mp] 2, Graziuso went for [101] to get rid of [bahamut].

[a ocea] got summoned, [a linde] followed and that then meant Engin could [ss] [sturge]. He brought back [a pike] and seemed like he realized he had just made a mistake, but he went on regardless, discarding [a mark] to add [a linde] to his hand, destroying a [lance] that got chained, targeting [101]. Engin [ss]ed his own copy of [101], it was met with [bth] and it detached a Material so it would stick on the field.

Graziuso attacked and both monsters detached a Material. He set a card.

Engin summoned, but his monster received a [warning]. He now attacked with [101], so both monsters left the field.

Graziuso passed play without performing any actions.

This gave Engin the opening he needed. He finally freed his back row card which was revealed to be [a sphere], this then allowed him to go off big time and after a flurry of [ss]s, he was left with the following field:

This time it would be Graziuso to start the game and he found a [wolfbark] with [duality]. He added it to his hand, [ff bear] hit play, he added 2 back row cards and it was up to Engin for the first time in this Duel.

The German set 4 back row cards and passed.

[ff gyok] shut down one of them, [ff bear] attacked and Engin took the damage. “Ouch!”, Engin announced – Graziuso probably found the right target. [ff tenki] followed and got Graziuso [ff gorilla]; The Italian summoned the monster, but that’s when Engin activated [overworked]. A [bom] saved [ff gorilla] for the time being.

[a linde] attempted to hit the field, but [warning] made sure that never happened.

[ff gorilla] took care of [bts], [wolfbark] followed, it brought back [ff bear] and Graziuso now Xyz Summoned a [dweller].

Engin only added 2 more back row cards.

[wolfbark] got switched to [def]. [dweller] attacked and Engin dropped to 4600 Life Points. Graziuso set a Spell or Trap and ended.

[a pike] got [ns]ed and it discarded [a gunde]. [veiler] stripped it off its effect, the effect of [dweller] got chained, but Engin also chained [bts]. Graziuso now chained [maxx], so when the chain resolved, [a linde] got [ss]ed and the Italian drew a card. “This is not good…”, Engin commented. He attacked over [wolfbark] and ended.

[mst] targeted [mst] and Engin chained it to destroy [ff gyok]. Graziuso chained another [mst] to destroy the card that would have been “free”: It was yet another [mst].

[bor] seemed like a great play for Graziuso who then attacked over Engin’s monsters. Engin passed, Graziuso activated a [ff tenki] the next turn and that’s when Engin accesses his Side Deck.

Engin started the last game with [tidal], attempting to [ss] [teus]. [a ocea] followed, but Graziuso discarded [maxx] at that point. [a linde] got [ss]ed, [teus] left the field, [a gunde] also joined Engin’s party and he then Xyz Summoned [mqangineer]. Another card for Graziuso.

[duality] got Graziuso [ff gyok]. He activated it, locking down 1 of the 4 cards Engin had set the previous turn, he summoned [ff bear] and it attacked [a linde]. Engin detached a material from [angi] so it wouldn’t get destroyed. [ff tensu] got activated and [ff bear]'[s] effect destroyed it right away again so Graziuso could get rid of [angi]. Graziuso set 3.

Engin drew, he set a fifth back row card and he passed play.

[duality] got Graziuso [lance], also revealing [bth] and another copy of [duality]. [ff tensu] got activated and Engin activated [full house]! Graziuso wasn’t happy, but the parts of the crowd that were rooting for Engin disagreed. Graziuso lost his back row, he set a Spell or Trap and ended.

Engin activated [reckless], he then brought back [tidal], [a linde] got switched to [atk], [a mark] came down and he attacked. This got him [a drag], he then filled up his back row and he passed for his turn.

Graziuso drew and he didn’t find an out.

Wow, that [full house] certainly felt more like a Royal Flush! Engin got rid of 5 (!) opposing cards while only losing 1 of his own, a great trade that single-handedly won him this match!
