Top 8: Matthew Mills (Fire Fist) vs Ole Wegner (Hieratics)

Here we are then: three matches away from the title. In the red corner (sitting next to the judge in the red shirt) is Matthew Mills from Exeter, UK. He’s playing Fire Fist and will be competing against the blue corner (next to the coverage writer in the kind of almost-Blue shirt) is Ole Wegner from Germany using Hieratics.

Mills started things off with two backrow.

Wegner Summoned [eset] and tributed it to [ss] [su], searching [wattail] in def. [tt] dealt with them and [upstart] was next. Wegner passed.

Mills Summoned [ff bear] and attacked, setting [ff tensu]. It was activated in [mp2] and a second [ff bear] was Summoned, used to [xyz] [roach] – a great card against Hieratics! He set a second backrow.

[shrine] was first, sending [f guard] and [tidal] which returned and attacked in to [mf].

[ff tenki] was there for Mills, searching his final copy of [ff bear]. Tensu allowed him to Summon [wolfbark] and [ff bear] – attacking with all then searching another [ff tenki]. In [mp2] he [xyz]ed [dweller] and passed with one card left in hand. [dweller] was activated in the Draw Phase.

[blaster] was [ss]ed from the hand and attacked over [roach]. Wegner had 900 to Mills’ 8100.

In [mp2] [eset] was Summoned and tributed for [su]. [convo] fetched [tefnuit] and it was discarded for Su’s effect to destroy the set Tenki. Wegner passed with one in hand.

[pod] was there for Mills, revealing [ff tenki], [veiler] and [coth]. He took the Tenki and used it get [wolfbark], passing after setting one more card and filling up his backrow.

[blaster] returned to Wegner’s hand and he was looking at a hand of the Dragon Ruler, [coth] and [convo]. He still had [su] on the field and studied both his and his opponent’s Graveyards before entering the Battle Phase and attacking over Dweller. Blaster wanted to return to the field in [def] but was denied by [sw]. He set both of his [st] cards expecting an [mst] and wasn’t disappointed – although it hit the pink one which the German did not want!

Knowing that Wolfbark would give Mills a plethora of plays on the next turn, Wegner picked his cards up and went for the Side Deck!

After that incredibly toolbox-y game one the Hieratic Deck would need to ensure a strong start to begin the comeback in game two.

Wegner started us off with [shrine] to send [wattail] and [blaster] to the Graveyard. He set two [st]s and then added two more to leave himself one in hand before passing.

Wegner would rely on his Side Deck for the remainder of the Duel.

Mills Summoned [ff bear] and attacked. Wegner played [skill drain] and paid 1000 LP only to get thwarted by an [mst] and take 1600 more. [ff bear] searched a [ff tenki] which fetched a [ff gorilla]. Mills set three.

In the Draw Phase Mills paid 1000 of his own to flip [soul drain]. His opponent flipped successive copies of [reckless] to draw four cards and then gave his opponent those LP he paid back to activate [upstart]. [convo] was next to get [tefnuit] and Wegner flipped [trap stun]. He Summoned [tefnuit] and played [wingbeat] to wipe Mills’ whole backrow!

[tefnuit] came back out and another [convo] got [su] before Wegner played another [upstart]. It was soon on the field, joined by [wattail] and [atum] was next. It detached [su] to search out [f guard] in def position. [blaster] was next and [gdtc] went over the Atum. Attacks followed and in [mp2] Wegner [synch]ed [stardust] and set three Trap cards.

It was a ridiculously strong turn for the German who now sat behind a huge wall of monsters and Trap cards. Mills revealed his draw to be a [maxx] a turn too late and went for his Side Deck when [wolfbark] was met by [sw].

Game three began with [ccd] and two backrow from Mills.

Wegner set two to match him and passed. [tkr] was Summoned by Mills and nudged towards the German to take 1900 from his LP.

In [mp2] Mills activated [ff tensu] and used his additional Summon to play [wolfbark], combining the two monsters for [roach].

[hole] from Wegner dealt with that threat and [eset] was Summoned in to [tt]. The Hieratic Duelist passed.

[ff tenki] from Mills fetched [ff gorilla] which shortly made it’s debut thanks to Tensu.

Tenki was sacrificed to destroy a chained [reckless] and [wolfbark] was Mills’ Normal Summon, retrieving it’s counterpart in [def]. The [atk] Wolfbark remained while the Gorilla and [def] Wolfbark were used to [xyz] [ff tigerking]. The ridiculously shiny Xyz Monster set a [ff tenki] from the Deck and in the Battle Phase Wegner ate 1700 and 2100 to the face.

After skipping his Draw Phase Wegner set a card to each zone.

[ff tenki] was flipped and searched [ff bear]. Tensu allowed it to hit the field and when it sent Tenki to the Graveyard Wegner gave up 1000 of his hard earned LP for [skill drain]. It was in vain though as [85] was next and the Brit made sure the following attacks would end the game!
