Top 8: Matthew Mills (Fire Fist) vs Ole Wegner (Hieratics)

23.02.2014 | 17:05 |
Here we are then: three matches away from the title. In the red corner (sitting next to the judge in the red shirt) is Matthew Mills from Exeter, UK. He's playing Fire Fist and will be competing against the blue corner (next to the coverage writer in the kind of almost-Blue shirt) is Ole Wegner from Germany using Hieratics. Mills started things off with two backrow. Wegner Summoned Hieratic Dragon of Eset and Tributed it to Special Summon Hieratic Dragon of Su, searching Wattaildragon in def. Torrential Tribute dealt with them and Upstart Goblin was next. Wegner passed.

Mills Summoned Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear and attacked, setting Fire Formation - Tensu. It was activated in Main Phase 2 and a second Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear was Summoned, used to Xyz Summon Steelswarm Roach - a great card against Hieratics! He set a second backrow. Dragon Shrine was first, sending Flamvell Guard and Tidal, Dragon Ruler of Waterfalls which returned and attacked in to Mirror Force. Fire Formation - Tenki was there for Mills, searching his final copy of Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear. Tensu allowed him to Summon Coach Soldier Wolfbark and Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear - attacking with all then searching another Fire Formation - Tenki. In Main Phase 2 he Xyz Summoned Abyss Dweller and passed with one card left in hand. Abyss Dweller was activated in the Draw Phase.

Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos was Special Summoned from the hand and attacked over Steelswarm Roach. Wegner had 900 to Mills' 8100. In Main Phase 2 Hieratic Dragon of Eset was Summoned and Tributed for Hieratic Dragon of Su. Hieratic Seal of Convocation fetched Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit and it was discarded for Su's effect to destroy the set Tenki. Wegner passed with one in hand. Pot of Duality was there for Mills, revealing Fire Formation - Tenki, Effect Veiler and Call of the Haunted. He took the Tenki and used it get Coach Soldier Wolfbark, passing after setting one more card and filling up his backrow. Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos returned to Wegner's hand and he was looking at a hand of the Dragon Ruler, Call of the Haunted and Hieratic Seal of Convocation. He still had Hieratic Dragon of Su on the field and studied both his and his opponent's Graveyards before entering the Battle Phase and attacking over Dweller. Blaster wanted to return to the field in Defense Position but was denied by Solemn Warning. He set both of his Spell/Trap cards expecting an Mystical Space Typhoon and wasn't disappointed - although it hit the pink one which the German did not want! Knowing that Wolfbark would give Mills a plethora of plays on the next turn, Wegner picked his cards up and went for the Side Deck!

Matthew Mills picks up the first game thanks to an endless supply of Tenki and Tensu!

After that incredibly toolbox-y game one the Hieratic Deck would need to ensure a strong start to begin the comeback in game two. Wegner started us off with Dragon Shrine to send Wattaildragon and Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos to the Graveyard. He set two Spell/Traps and then added two more to leave himself one in hand before passing.

Wegner would rely on his Side Deck for the remainder of the Duel.

Mills Summoned Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear and attacked. Wegner played Skill Drain and paid 1000 Life Points only to get thwarted by an Mystical Space Typhoon and take 1600 more. Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear searched a Fire Formation - Tenki which fetched a Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Gorilla. Mills set three. In the Draw Phase Mills paid 1000 of his own to flip Soul Drain. His opponent flipped successive copies of Reckless Greed to draw four cards and then gave his opponent those Life Points he paid back to activate Upstart Goblin. Hieratic Seal of Convocation was next to get Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit and Wegner flipped Trap Stun. He Summoned Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit and played A Wingbeat of Giant Dragon to wipe Mills' whole backrow! Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit came back out and another Hieratic Seal of Convocation got Hieratic Dragon of Su before Wegner played another Upstart Goblin. It was soon on the field, joined by Wattaildragon and Hieratic Dragon King of Atum was next. It detached Hieratic Dragon of Su to search out Flamvell Guard in def position. Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos was next and Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger went over the Atum. Attacks followed and in Main Phase 2 Wegner Synchro Summoned Stardust Dragon and set three Trap cards.

Solemn Warning sealed the deal for game two!

It was a ridiculously strong turn for the German who now sat behind a huge wall of monsters and Trap cards. Mills revealed his draw to be a Maxx "C" a turn too late and went for his Side Deck when Coach Soldier Wolfbark was met by Solemn Warning.

Game two goes to the blue corner and Wegner is back in it!

Game three began with Cardcar D and two backrow from Mills. Wegner set two to match him and passed. Thunder King Rai-Oh was Summoned by Mills and nudged towards the German to take 1900 from his Life Points. In Main Phase 2 Mills activated Fire Formation - Tensu and used his additional Summon to play Coach Soldier Wolfbark, combining the two monsters for Steelswarm Roach. Dark Hole from Wegner dealt with that threat and Hieratic Dragon of Eset was Summoned in to Torrential Tribute. The Hieratic Duelist passed. Fire Formation - Tenki from Mills fetched Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Gorilla which shortly made it's debut thanks to Tensu.

Advantage: Fire Fist

Advantage: Fire Fist

Tenki was sacrificed to destroy a Chained Reckless Greed and Coach Soldier Wolfbark was Mills' Normal Summon, retrieving it's counterpart in Defense Position. The Attack Position Wolfbark remained while the Gorilla and Defense Position Wolfbark were used to Xyz Summon Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King. The ridiculously shiny Xyz Monster set a Fire Formation - Tenki from the Deck and in the Battle Phase Wegner ate 1700 and 2100 to the face. After skipping his Draw Phase Wegner set a card to each zone. Fire Formation - Tenki was flipped and searched Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Bear. Tensu allowed it to hit the field and when it sent Tenki to the Graveyard Wegner gave up 1000 of his hard earned Life Points for Skill Drain. It was in vain though as Number 85: Crazy Box was next and the Brit made sure the following attacks would end the game!

Mills had to think inside the box to win!

Congratulations to Matthew Mills who will continue on to the top four!
