24.02.2013 | 17:11 |

[p]We took a short break, getting the profiles of the Top 8 players ready. We’re now all set to procede with the third to last match of the day; in the quarter finals, we got Nick Boulbassakos piloting Mermails as well as Phi-Long Ly relying on Heroes.

Nick Boulbassakos wanted to show everyone the real power of the Mermails!

[nbsp][p]
Boulbassakos kicked things off, setting a card to each zone.
[/p][p]
Ly set 2 back row cards and when he announced that he wanted to end his turn, Boulbassakos used [asphere] to [ss] [linde]. It got destroyed during the End Phase, which allowed Boulbassakos to add [pike] to his side of the field. He used its effect, discarding [amark] and he searched his Deck for [undine] and destroyed [sj].
[/p][nbsp]
No wonder Boulbassakos' Deck was this consistent - he had plenty of search effects!

[nbsp][p]
[reborn] brought back [amark] and Ly chained [maxx] in response. [linde] got [fs]ed, Boulbassakos then entered his Battle Phase and [pike] attacked directly, dealing 1.600 points of damage. [linde] and [amark] followed and Boulbassakos contemplated activating the effect of the latter. He eventually settled on using it, [ss]ing [adrag] to the field. Ly drew another card. [adrag] dealt another 1.800 points of damage, leaving Ly on a meager 1.700 Life Points!
[/p][p]
[hole] wiped the field! [linde] allowed Ly to search his Deck for [pike] and [ss]ing it. He discarded [adrag] and then searched his Deck for [amark] as well as [megalo]. Ly then set a card to each zone before passing.

[nbsp][p]
Boulbassakos [ns]ed [undine] and he activated the effect. Ly used [veiler] to negate it, but [amark] still hit Boulbassakos’ Graveyard, allowing him to destroy [warning]. [amark] and [moulin] were ditched to [ss] [megalo]. That meant Ly would lose [road] while Boulbassakos was allowed to add [asphere] to his hand.[br]
[undine] left the field so [megalo] could attack twice, it then ran over the set hero and the following attack meant game for Greece!

Nick Boulbassakos takes the lead!

[nbsp][p]
Ly wasted no time and introduced a number of cards from his Side Deck into his Main Deck. Boulbassakos on the other hand didn’t seem to be hesitant either, also swapping quite a few cards to improve his chances in this important Duel. Ly then opted to go first.
[/p][nbsp]

Phi-Long Ly now had to win 2 games in a row!

[nbsp][p]
Ly went into high gear right away, [ns]ing [stratos] and adding [alius] to his hand.
[/p][p]
Boulbassakos thought for a minute about his opening before [ns]ing [linde]. He sent her into [stratos] before [ss]ing [megalo] to the field. He attacked over [stratos] and Ly [ss]ed [trag] in the Damage Step.[br]
Boulbassakos set 2 back row cards and ended.
[/p][p]
[storm] cleared the way for [trag], which dealt with [megalo]. Ly then passed play.
[/p][nbsp]
Would Tragoedia give Boulbassakos something to do?!

Would Tragoedia give Boulbassakos something to do?!

[nbsp][p]
This forced Boulbassakos to shift gears and he only set a card to each zone.
[/p][p]
[mst] got rid of [iiw], [trag] attacked over the set [linde] and that meant Boulbassakos would get to [ss] [pike]. He discarded another copy to search his Deck for [undine].
[/p][p]
On his following turn, Boulbassakos [ns]ed [undine], he sent [adrag] to the Graveyard to add both [controller] as well as [diva] to his hand and he then switched [pike] to [atk], set a card and passed.
[/p][p]
[alius] came down and Ly declared an attack with [trag] over [undine]. That worked and [alius] took out [pike]. Ly set 3 back row cards.
[/p][nbsp]
Finally, Tragoedia shrunk a little, but a wild Alius appeared!

[nbsp][p]
Suddenly, [trag] seemed a lot less daunting. The field of Ly as a whole, however, seemed as threatening as ever! Boulbassakos drew into his 4th card and he went into the tank. After much consideration, he activated [storm]. Ly chained [spark], to which Boulbassakos chained the target: [asphere]. That meant Boulbassakos would get to [ss] [linde], which was then destroyed, causing him to [ss] [megalo]. Ly drew a card because of [spark] and when Boulbassakos went for [diva], [veiler] negated its effect. [diva] then left the field for the effect of [megalo] and it attacked twice, first destroying [trag] and then attacking directly, leaving Ly on 3.800 Life Points.
[/p][p]
[reborn] brought back [stratos], Ly then searched his Deck for [alius], he activated [super poly], discarding [alius], [ss]ing [zero] and he followed it up with [miracle] to [ss] [shining]! “How much is it?”, Boulbassakos asked…
[/p][nbsp]
"IT'S OVER 6.000!!!", the judge replied!

IT IS OVER 6.000!!!, the judge replied!

[nbsp]

Phi-Long Ly ties the score!

[nbsp]
[p]
I still tried to recover from the “It’s over 6.000!”, comment, bringing up some fond memories. The players didn’t seem to have that much trouble, siding out some cards to get ready for the all deciding Duel!
[/p][p]
Boulbassakos opted to go first and he got the ball rolling with [megalo], discarding [amark] and [adrag]. Ly had [maxx] to draw a fresh card, while Boulbassakos searched his Deck for [diva] and [asphere]. He set 2 back row cards and ended.
[/p][p]
[duality] got Ly [bth], he [ns]ed [alius], set a spell or trap and ended. His [spark] got destroyed by [mst].
[/p][nbsp]

Deep Sea Diva was met with Maxx "C"!

[nbsp][p]
[diva] allowed Boulbassakos to [ss] [ahi] to the field while Ly chained another [maxx], drawing him a new card. [megalo] attacked over [alius] and [trag] came down. [diva] and [ahi] were then used to [xyz] [ggg]. That meant Ly would get to draw yet another card. Boulbassakos added a second face-down back row card before ending.
[/p][p]
Ly had [storm], but he opted not to perform any actions, relying on [trag] instead.
[/p][p]
Boulbassakos found another [diva], which then got him a second copy from his Deck. He took very long deciding on this play, causing the judge to award him a Slow Play warning. He followed it up with [asphere], [ss]ing [pike], he then went for [dewloren] and play proceeded with the Battle Phase. After the Synchro Monster dealt with [trag], [megalo] dealt 2.800 damage. That left Ly on 4.700 Life Points. Boulbassakos set a second back row card and ended.
[/p][nbsp]
Could Phi-Long Ly come back with the help of Heavy Storm?!

Could Phi-Long Ly come back with the help of Heavy Storm?!

[nbsp][p]
[storm] wiped Boulbassakos’ back row. [rota] on [stratos] followed, it was [ns]ed, Ly added [alius] to his hand, he then activated [super poly], discarding [alius] and this helped him to get rid of [ggg]. He Fusion Summoned [e gaia] and used its effect, reducing the ATK of [megalo]. [e gaia] was now a 3.400 ATK beast and it attacked over [megalo]. Boulbassakos went down to 5.600 Life Points. Ly set 2 back row cards and he ended.
[/p][p]
Boulbassakos [ns]ed [diva]. I had seen this before. This allowed him to [ss] [amark]. Ly responded with [super poly] and he used his monster and the [amark] to [ss] [zero]. Boulbassakos then added 2 more back row cards and he ended.
[/p][nbsp]
Miracle Fusion from the top brought Phi-Long Ly back!

Miracle Fusion from the top brought Phi-Long Ly back!

[nbsp][p]
Ly drew into [miracle]!!! This was huge as it got him [shining]. He attacked with [zero] over the weakened [dewloren] and that meant Boulbassakos lost 1.000 Life Points. The attack of [shining] got stopped by [ced]. Ly didn’t flinch and he flipped [sj]! This forced the attack through and Boulbassakos dropped to 1.400 Life Points while Ly was left with 2.350 Life Points.
[/p][p]
Back to Boulbassakos, who flipped [hole]! He followed it up with what felt like the 5th [diva] in this game, this got him [amark], he attacked with it and then followed it up with [adrag]!
[/p][nbsp]

Nick Boulbassakos advances to the Semi Finals!

[nbsp][p]
Wow, what a thriller! It seemed like Phi-Long Ly was living the dream when he Fusion Summoned one Elemental Hero after another, but in the end, Nick Boulbassakos’ Mermails didn’t let him down and provided him with the third and game deciding [diva]!
