Top 8: Nick Boulbassakos (Mermail) vs. Phi-Long Ly (Bubble Beat)
24.02.2013 | 17:11
We took a short break, getting the profiles of the Top 8 players ready. We're now all set to procede with the third to last match of the day; in the quarter finals, we got Nick Boulbassakos piloting Mermails as well as Phi-Long Ly relying on Heroes.
Boulbassakos kicked things off, setting a card to each zone.
Ly set 2 back row cards and when he announced that he wanted to end his turn, Boulbassakos used Abyss-Sphere to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde. It got destroyed during the End Phase, which allowed Boulbassakos to add Mermail Abysspike to his side of the field. He used its effect, discarding Atlantean Marksman and he searched his Deck for Genex Undine and destroyed Solemn Judgment.
Monster Reborn brought back Atlantean Marksman and Ly Chained Maxx "C" in response. Mermail Abysslinde got Flip Summoned, Boulbassakos then entered his Battle Phase and Mermail Abysspike attacked directly, dealing 1.600 points of damage. Mermail Abysslinde and Atlantean Marksman followed and Boulbassakos contemplated activating the effect of the latter. He eventually settled on using it, Special Summoning Atlantean Dragoons to the field. Ly drew another card. Atlantean Dragoons dealt another 1.800 points of damage, leaving Ly on a meager 1.700 Life Points!
Dark Hole wiped the field! Mermail Abysslinde allowed Ly to search his Deck for Mermail Abysspike and Special Summoning it. He discarded Atlantean Dragoons and then searched his Deck for Atlantean Marksman as well as Mermail Abyssmegalo. Ly then set a card to each zone before passing.
Boulbassakos Normal Summoned Genex Undine and he activated the effect. Ly used Effect Veiler to negate it, but Atlantean Marksman still hit Boulbassakos' Graveyard, allowing him to destroy Solemn Warning. Atlantean Marksman and Moulinglacia the Elemental Lord were ditched to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo. That meant Ly would lose Starlight Road while Boulbassakos was allowed to add Abyss-Sphere to his hand.
Genex Undine left the field so Mermail Abyssmegalo could attack twice, it then ran over the set hero and the following attack meant game for Greece!
Nick Boulbassakos takes the lead!
Ly wasted no time and introduced a number of cards from his Side Deck into his Main Deck. Boulbassakos on the other hand didn't seem to be hesitant either, also swapping quite a few cards to improve his chances in this important Duel. Ly then opted to go first.
Boulbassakos thought for a minute about his opening before Normal Summoning Mermail Abysslinde. He sent her into Elemental HERO Stratos before Special Summoning Mermail Abyssmegalo to the field. He attacked over Elemental HERO Stratos and Ly Special Summoned Tragoedia in the Damage Step.
Boulbassakos set 2 back row cards and ended.
This forced Boulbassakos to shift gears and he only set a card to each zone.
Mystical Space Typhoon got rid of Imperial Iron Wall, Tragoedia attacked over the set Mermail Abysslinde and that meant Boulbassakos would get to Special Summon Mermail Abysspike. He discarded another copy to search his Deck for Genex Undine.
On his following turn, Boulbassakos Normal Summoned Genex Undine, he sent Atlantean Dragoons to the Graveyard to add both Genex Controller as well as Deep Sea Diva to his hand and he then switched Mermail Abysspike to Attack Position, set a card and passed.
Suddenly, Tragoedia seemed a lot less daunting. The field of Ly as a whole, however, seemed as threatening as ever! Boulbassakos drew into his 4th card and he went into the tank. After much consideration, he activated Heavy Storm. Ly Chained Gemini Spark, to which Boulbassakos Chained the target: Abyss-Sphere. That meant Boulbassakos would get to Special Summon Mermail Abysslinde, which was then destroyed, causing him to Special Summon Mermail Abyssmegalo. Ly drew a card because of Gemini Spark and when Boulbassakos went for Deep Sea Diva, Effect Veiler negated its effect. Deep Sea Diva then left the field for the effect of Mermail Abyssmegalo and it attacked twice, first destroying Tragoedia and then attacking directly, leaving Ly on 3.800 Life Points.
Monster Reborn brought back Elemental HERO Stratos, Ly then searched his Deck for Elemental HERO Neos Alius, he activated Super Polymerization, discarding Elemental HERO Neos Alius, Special Summoning Elemental HERO Absolute Zero and he followed it up with Miracle Fusion to Special Summon Elemental HERO The Shining! "How much is it?", Boulbassakos asked...
Phi-Long Ly ties the score!
I still tried to recover from the "It's over 6.000!", comment, bringing up some fond memories. The players didn't seem to have that much trouble, siding out some cards to get ready for the all deciding Duel!
Boulbassakos opted to go first and he got the ball rolling with Mermail Abyssmegalo, discarding Atlantean Marksman and Atlantean Dragoons. Ly had Maxx "C" to draw a fresh card, while Boulbassakos searched his Deck for Deep Sea Diva and Abyss-Sphere. He set 2 back row cards and ended.
Deep Sea Diva allowed Boulbassakos to Special Summon Atlantean Heavy Infantry to the field while Ly Chained another Maxx "C", drawing him a new card. Mermail Abyssmegalo attacked over Elemental HERO Neos Alius and Tragoedia came down. Deep Sea Diva and Atlantean Heavy Infantry were then used to Xyz Summon Gachi Gachi Gantetsu. That meant Ly would get to draw yet another card. Boulbassakos added a second face-down back row card before ending.
Boulbassakos found another Deep Sea Diva, which then got him a second copy from his Deck. He took very long deciding on this play, causing the judge to award him a Slow Play warning. He followed it up with Abyss-Sphere, Special Summoning Mermail Abysspike, he then went for Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier and play proceeded with the Battle Phase. After the Synchro Monster dealt with Tragoedia, Mermail Abyssmegalo dealt 2.800 damage. That left Ly on 4.700 Life Points. Boulbassakos set a second back row card and ended.
Heavy Storm wiped Boulbassakos' back row. Reinforcement of the Army on Elemental HERO Stratos followed, it was Normal Summoned, Ly added Elemental HERO Neos Alius to his hand, he then activated Super Polymerization, discarding Elemental HERO Neos Alius and this helped him to get rid of Gachi Gachi Gantetsu. He Fusion Summoned Elemental HERO Gaia and used its effect, reducing the ATK of Mermail Abyssmegalo. Elemental HERO Gaia was now a 3.400 ATK beast and it attacked over Mermail Abyssmegalo. Boulbassakos went down to 5.600 Life Points. Ly set 2 back row cards and he ended.
Boulbassakos Normal Summoned Deep Sea Diva. I had seen this before. This allowed him to Special Summon Atlantean Marksman. Ly responded with Super Polymerization and he used his monster and the Atlantean Marksman to Special Summon Elemental HERO Absolute Zero. Boulbassakos then added 2 more back row cards and he ended.
Ly drew into Miracle Fusion!!! This was huge as it got him Elemental HERO The Shining. He attacked with Elemental HERO Absolute Zero over the weakened Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier and that meant Boulbassakos lost 1.000 Life Points. The attack of Elemental HERO The Shining got stopped by Compulsory Evacuation Device. Ly didn't flinch and he flipped Solemn Judgment! This forced the attack through and Boulbassakos dropped to 1.400 Life Points while Ly was left with 2.350 Life Points.
Back to Boulbassakos, who flipped Dark Hole! He followed it up with what felt like the 5th Deep Sea Diva in this game, this got him Atlantean Marksman, he attacked with it and then followed it up with Atlantean Dragoons!
Nick Boulbassakos advances to the Semi Finals!
Wow, what a thriller! It seemed like Phi-Long Ly was living the dream when he Fusion Summoned one Elemental Hero after another, but in the end, Nick Boulbassakos' Mermails didn't let him down and provided him with the third and game deciding Deep Sea Diva!
