Top 8 Player Interviews

14.12.2014 | 6:25 |

The YCS is drawing to a close, and 8 Duelists are all that remain in the main event! We’ve had some interviews with these players to see how they’re doing, and what kinds of Decks and strategies they’ve used to get to where they are!

Robin

Name: Robin Sum

Age: 20

Country/State: Sydney, Australia

What Deck are you playing and why did you pick it? I chose Qliphort, because it’s a little bit easier to play than the other Decks, plus my friends helped me out with getting all of the cards I needed for the Deck.

What do you think about your chances of winning the event? I haven’t had much practice, but I’m confident that I can win if I get lucky. It could go either way!

Do you have any tech cards that have made a difference over the weekend? I think my entire Deck is “secret tech” (laughs). I Main Decked 2 The Monarchs Stormforth and 2 Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror.

What card, in your opinion, was “Card of the Year 2014”? Raigeki, because it’s always been that iconic card that nobody expected to come back. It’s insanely strong.

Michael Madera 2

Name: Michael Madera

Age: 20

Country/State: New South Wales, Australia

What Deck are you playing and why did you pick it? I’m playing Qliphort, because the other Decks were too complicated and Qliphorts were the easiest and most powerful option.

What do you think about your chances of winning the event? I believe in my Deck, so I think I can go all the way!

Do you have any tech cards that have made a difference over the weekend? Book of Moon. I only did a little bit of testing with it, but it worked really well every time I played it.

What card, in your opinion, was “Card of the Year 2014”? Vanity’s Emptiness, since every Deck Special Summons and it can shut down just about any strategy.

 Lincoln 3

Name: Lincoln Morrisey-Johnston

Age: 19

Country/State: Queensland, Australia

What Deck are you playing and why did you pick it? I’m using a Shaddoll Artifact Deck. I’ve been playing Shaddolls ever since Duelist Alliance so it’s my main choice, plus the Artifacts help out in Game 1 against Qliphort.

What do you think about your chances of winning the event? I’m taking it one game at a time. I’m trying not to think about the end, I’m just playing each game as it comes.

Do you have any tech cards that have made a difference over the weekend? I side 1 copy of The End of Anubis, and a single System Down as well. I’m also Main Decking Felis, Lightsworn Archer as another way to destroy monsters.

What card, in your opinion, was “Card of the Year 2014”? Super Polymerization. This card is “the McNuggies”. Really really strong!

 Zac c 4

Name: Zac Conduit

Age: 25

Country/State: Western Australia

What Deck are you playing and why did you pick it? Qliphort! I picked it because it’s a very consistent and controlling Deck, so I thought it was a good choice over the course of a long tournament.

What do you think about your chances of winning the event? I’m not too fussed about winning, I’m just here for fun. All of my friends back home are cheering me on, so I’ll see if I can do well for them!

Do you have any tech cards that have made a difference over the weekend? I’m following the advice of a player from overseas who uses Dust Tornado in the Main Deck, which has helped out a lot over the weekend.

What card, in your opinion, was “Card of the Year 2014”? Fire Lake of the Burning Abyss, because it’s really powerful and exactly what the Burning Abyss Deck needed.

Jackson Spadaro

Name: Jackson Spadaro

Age: 17

Country/State: Melbourne, Australia

What Deck are you playing and why did you pick it? Burning Abyss, because it does what it wants to do the most consistently of the top Decks right now.

What do you think about your chances of winning the event? I think my chances are pretty good. Every time I get into the Top cut, I usually do pretty well.

Do you have any tech cards that have made a difference over the weekend? The only one I’d say is Main Decking Maxx "C", which gave me a big edge in the mirror match in Game 1.

What card, in your opinion, was “Card of the Year 2014”? Probably Phoenix Wing Wind Blast, it’s just an all round good card.

 Gaoxiang Le

Name: Le Gaoxiang

Age: 23

Country/State: China

What Deck are you playing and why did you pick it? I’m playing a ‘tellarknight Deck, because I like this Deck, and Deneb reminds of Elemental HERO Stratos. Plus, Rank 4 Xyz Monsters are very flexible and strong, so I can deal with almost any situation.

What do you think about your chances of winning the event? I have a really bad matchup against Qliphort, and with 3 in the Top 8 my chances against them are slim.

Do you have any tech cards that have made a difference over the weekend? Stellarknight Triverr is the MVP of my Deck, allowing to reuse all of my Call of the Haunted and Fiendish Chains again, which is a huge advantage.

What card, in your opinion, was “Card of the Year 2014”? Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, for sure. The only games I lost were when my opponents played Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, so it’s a really strong card.

Peter

Name: Peter Mitro

Age: 19

Country/State: Sydney, Australia

What Deck are you playing and why did you pick it? I am using a Shaddoll Artifact Deck, because I believe it is the most powerful Deck, even if it isn’t consistent as Burning Abyss.

What do you think about your chances of winning the event? I think that I can win the whole thing!

Do you have any tech cards that have made a difference over the weekend? Raiza the Storm Monarch has won me almost all of my mirror matches, I love that card.

What card, in your opinion, was “Card of the Year 2014”? Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning, it is really strong. Pretty much any time you Summon it, you win.

 Xiaoyu Dai

Name: Xiaoyu Dai

Age: 22

Country/State: China

What Deck are you playing and why did you pick it? Shaddoll, it’s the only Deck I had but I was very experienced with it, so it was a good choice.

What do you think about your chances of winning the event? I want to win, so as long as I want to I should be able to make it happen.

Do you have any tech cards that have made a difference over the weekend? A Side Decked Mirror Force has won me so many games this weekend!

What card, in your opinion, was “Card of the Year 2014”? Shaddoll Fusion, definitely. It’s so strong when you can get free Fusion Materials from your Deck!
