After 11 rounds of Swiss and 2 more rounds in the knock out portion of today's competition, we have dwindled a field of 1208 Duelists down to just 8!
Age: 16 Hometown: Exeter, UK Occupation: Pupil Deck you played this weekend: Fire Fist - I like that it has a good match-up against most of the other Decks and it's very consistent. Previous accomplishments: I topped a lot of Regionals and I've won a few of them, but that's pretty much it. What's your goal for 2014? Now that I've come so far, I want to go on and win YCS Berlin! What was your best play all weekend? Opening Traptrix Myrmeleo with 5 Traps in hand already against Bujin. There was next to nothing he could do that match! If you were to design a card, what would it do? It would have to be a support card for HEROes. It should feature a high ATK and it's effect should read something like: "When this card is Summoned, add 1 HERO card from your Graveyard to your hand."
Age: 19 Hometown: Athens, Greece Occupation: Student Deck you played this weekend: Geargia - I had nothing else to play! Previous accomplishments: Top 8 at YCS Turin and Top 32 at the European Championship in 2012 and I also reached the Tops at a couple of National Championships in Greece. What's your goal for 2014? I want to attend Worlds this year! What was your best play all weekend? The problem is that this Deck is mostly pulling off the same combos. It's always Karakuri Shogun mdl 00 "Burei" and Karakuri Steel Shogun mdl 00x "Bureido" and then attack for game. If you were to design a card, what would it do? It would be a card that would shut down Chain Burn! Like a searchable Quick Play Spell that reads: "When your opponent deals direct damage with a card effect, you take no damage and he takes double the damage he would have inflicted!"
Age: 19 Hometown: Venice, Italy Occupation: I want to be a musician. Deck you played this weekend: Fire Fist - It's one of my favorite Decks and in the current environment, it's very well positioned. It's consistent and I came up with a couple of ideas to gain the upper hand in mirror matches, that's why I chose it. Previous accomplishments: Top 32 YCS Paris Top 32 at YCS Toulouse I also topped 3 years in a row in my National Championship. What's your goal for 2014? I want to go to Worlds this year, so I need to do well at the European Championship! What was your best play all weekend? I started so bad in a mirror match and I had no monsters left in my Main Phase. Instead of playing Mirror Force or Dimensional Prison, I used Memory of an Adversary to use my opponent's monsters against him! I ended up winning because of that! If you were to design a card, what would it do? There are a lot of cards that I like, so it's very hard to come up with something. It should be something that works similar to Thunder King Rai-Oh, but that's not quite as strong so it won't get limited. Let's say 1600 ATK, WATER, Level 3 (so you can search it with Mermail Abysspike) and it prevents your opponent from adding cards from his Deck to his hand except by drawing.
Age: 22 Hometown: Florence, Italy Occupation: Cab driver Deck you played this weekend: Fire Fist - we splashed Traptrix to make the Deck more consistent. Rather than 2 random cards that you would get with Cardcar D, you get a Bottomless Trap Hole! Previous accomplishments: I topped my National Championships the last 3 years in a row! What's your goal for 2014? I want to win a YCS or the European Championship so I can attend Worlds! What was your best play all weekend? The one move I enjoyed the most was when I played Federico Zoppini. He played Mystical Space Typhoon in my End Phase and he Chained Full House, but I had a Starlight Road to counter it! If you were to design a card, what would it do? Generally speaking, I enjoy powerful cards like Chaos Emperor Dragon - Envoy of the End, but those tend to end up a little too strong. Let's add a new boss monster for the Gravekeepers! It should allow you to Special Summon even when you have Necrovalley on the field!
Age: 26 Hometown: Cologne, Germany Occupation: Chemist Deck you played this weekend: Mermails - It's the best Deck in the format! You have plenty of options turn for turn and it can also Special Summon a bunch of monsters all in one turn to finish games out of nowhere. Do I need to say anything else? Previous accomplishments: I topped my National Championships and the European Championship before, but then my illness forced me to take a long break. My biggest successes were back in 2008, but I hope I can start my real comeback now. What's your goal for 2014? I want to be able to walk again and I'm getting really close. Everything else is secondary and that includes tournament successes. What was your best play all weekend? Just now in the Feature Match. I played against Chain Burner, I was able to Special Summon Armades, Keeper of Boundaries and it attacked exactly for game with my opponent having no chance to stop it! If you were to design a card, what would it do? I would like to see something like a Dark Armed Dragon for the LIGHT archetype. Here goes: Light Armed Dragon, 8 Stars, LIGHT, 2800 ATK, 1500 DEF, You can special Summon this card (from your hand) when you have exactly 3 LIGHT monsters (and no other monsters) in your Graveyard. Once per turn: You can banish 1 LIGHT monster from your Graveyard and target a card your opponent controls; destroy that target.
Age: 19 (he wishes...) Hometown: Berlin, Germany Occupation: Barkeeper Deck you played this weekend: Chain Burn - it's the cheapest Deck in the format! Previous accomplishments: I won a number of regional tournaments in the Berlin area and topped a couple of larger events like the National Championships in Germany, etc. What's your goal for 2014? I want to go to the gym more often. What was your best play all weekend? I had 2 great situations: The first was with Mind Crush. I used Pot of Duality to add Jar of Greed to my hand. My opponent then activated Mind Crush and he named "Pot of Greed" - that seemed pretty strong. The second situation: My opponent had 4 of his monster slots filled (3 of them being Ojama Tokens). I then Special Summoned a Lava Golem, but he used Bottomless Trap Hole on it. So I activated a second Ojama Trio and all of his zones were full. He didn't have another out remaining in his Deck. If you were to design a card, what would it do? I'll play Chain Burn forever and I already have all the cards I need to make it work.
Age: 20 Hometown: Flensburg, Germany Occupation: Student Deck you played this weekend: Hieratic Dragons - It can run Skill Drain and still function - there are few Decks that have this advantage going for them! Previous accomplishments: I reached the Top 32 at YCS Bochum last year. I also did rather well at a number of local tournaments. What's your goal for 2014? I want to advance with my studies so I can soon start to teach kids. What was your best play all weekend? My opponent Stefano Memoli had Lavalval Chain, Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack and a Token and I played Hieratic Dragon of Tefnuit, I Tributed it for Hieratic Dragon of Su, I then Special Summoned Constellar Ptolemy M7, I returned Dragunity Corsesca to my hand, I Summoned it and then a Dragon Ruler, Crimson Blader and Gaia Dragon, the Thunder Charger. That was enough to turn the game around! If you were to design a card, what would it do? It needs to be a very balanced card, let's say a Destiny Draw for Wind-Ups!
Age: 19 Hometown: Cologne, Germany Occupation: Pupil Deck you played this weekend: Mermails - the Deck features a number of strong combos, you have enough destructive effects, you can defend yourself easily with Abyss-Sphere and it's explosive. Previous accomplishments: Top 8 YCS Barcelona Won YCS Bochum 2013 Top 16 YCS Lille Top 64 European Championship 2013 Finalist YCS London Top 8 YCS Turin What's your goal for 2014? I want to go to the World Championships! What was your best play all weekend? I played Bahamut Shark, my opponent had Mermail Abyssgaios, I attacked with it, he didn't respond and I found Forbidden Lance in the Damage Step. He wasn't too happy. If you were to design a card, what would it do? Destiny Draw for Wind-Ups!
