Age: 18

Hometown: Gießen, Germany

Occupation: Student

Deck you played this weekend:
Dragon Rulers – I still think it’s the best Deck in the format. Everything works together, there are endless combos and resources and if you’re able to master them all, you’ll come out successful most of the time.

Previous accomplishments:
World Championship competitor 2012
6 Top 32 at the YCS
I went to the knock out portion of the European Championship twice.

What was your highlight of 2013?
I think YCS London was the best Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series so far. So yeah, it’s my personal highlight of the year.

Why should we run a YCS in your hometown?
We only have space for around 16 players, so we would finish very fast!

What was your best play all weekend?
I was able to Special Summon Trident Dragion and I won both games with it in the Round 8 Feature Match.

Age: 22

Hometown: Gouda, Netherlands

Occupation: Student

Deck you played this weekend:
Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – I don’t like the Dragon Rulers and I have been playing this Deck forever now. So I just added 3 Imperial Iron Wall to the Main Deck and hoped for the best and well, that worked out so far.

Previous accomplishments:
I topped the National Championship back in 2010 and I won a few Regionals, but that’s pretty much it.

What was your highlight of 2013?
It was very interesting when the Japanese playlist came out and everybody started to play according to that list. The European list then turned everything upside down and it was so chaotic, I loved it! Also, I enjoyed seeing Wytze trying so hard at every tournament this week, but never quite getting there.

Why should we run a YCS in your hometown?
We probably shouldn’t, but it’s near my home and I would definitely like that. (“We have some great cheese!”, one of his friends added)

What was your best play all weekend?
I was able to Summon 2 Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Cardinal to the field and I then flipped Imperial Iron Wall. That game was pretty much over at that point!

Jan Oliver Gross is the youngest competitor remaining in the tournament this weekend!

Age: 15

Hometown: Michelbach, near Marburg, Germany

Occupation: Pupil

Deck you played this weekend:
Dragunity Ruler – I like the Inzektor archetype, but it couldn’t quite convince me when I was preparing for the tournament. So I then switched Decks and never looked back and so far, it’s working for me.

Previous accomplishments:
This is definitely my biggest accomplishment so far; I’ve only won some local tournaments before.

What was your highlight of 2013?
The World Championship in Las Vegas. I was able to attend the Public Events there and had quite a good time!

Why should we run a YCS in your hometown?
I wouldn’t have to travel far and we would have more people in town than ever before!

What was your best play all weekend?
I was playing against Noble Knights and I wasn’t familiar with the Deck. He’s going for the combo, but I Main Decked a D.D. Crow, banished a Noble Arms Equip Spell Card from his Graveyard when he was trying to go off, I then Summoned XX-Saber Gottoms the following turn, hitting his best card in hand and he was shuffling up in frustration.

I want to thank Joshua Schmidt for forcing me to play D.D. Crow in my Main Deck; it’s been the best card for me all weekend.

Age: 18

Hometown: Cologne, Germany

Occupation: Pupil

Deck you played this weekend:
Dragon Ruler – I enjoy playing the Deck since it leaves my opponents with very few outs.

Previous accomplishments:
Top 8 YCS Barcelona
Winner YCS Bochum 2013
Top 16 YCS Lille
Top 64 European Championship 2013
Runner-Up YCS London

What was your highlight of 2013?
I beat Joshua Schmidt in a Feature Match with ease!

Why should we run a YCS in your hometown?
Cologne is easy to reach from many different places and well, it wouldn’t be too far for me.

What was your best play all weekend?
I played Piyal Peiris in the Top 16 and I drew into exactly what I needed for several turns in a row!

Age: 25

Hometown: Munich, Germany

Occupation: Student

Deck you played this weekend:
Dragon Ruler – Trident Dragion is such a good card!

Previous accomplishments:
Winner European Championship 2011
Winner YCS Brussels
Winner YCS Bochum 2010
Finalist European Championship 2013
3rd at YCS London 2013
A couple other decent finishes and 2 participations at the World Championship.

What was your highlight of 2013?
Thanks to my decent results this year, I reached the knock out portion of major events 24 times, more than any other player in the world!

Why should we run a YCS in your hometown?
We got an airport, the Oktoberfest and it’s somewhat central in Europe, what else could you ask for?

What was your best play all weekend?
Trident Dragion with a set Debunk to make sure I could attack even if my opponent had Battle Fader or Swift Scarecrow. That was pretty devastating!

Age: 19

Hometown: Athens, Greece

Occupation: Student

Deck you played this weekend:
Evilswarm – I think it’s the Deck with the most answers to Dragon Rulers and I expected quite a few of those.

Previous accomplishments:
Top 32 European Championship 2012
2x Top 8 at the Greek Nationals

What was your highlight of 2013?
I can’t pick a particular event, but I came really close a number of times before, always losing on the bubble. Today, I was also on the bubble for 4 rounds, but I ended up making the cut, so I guess it’s this event!

Why should we run a YCS in your hometown?
We have around 300 players in our National Championships and it would be really nice to have a large tournament like the YCS in our country so they could all compete against the best players from all over the world!

What was your best play all weekend?
Round 1, I sided into Evilswarm O'lantern against a Dragon Ruler player. She started with Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack and 3 more Dragon Rulers. I Special Summoned Evilswam Mandragora, I then Normal Summoned Evilswarm Castor, I then Normal Summoned Evilswarm O'lantern and after attacking the Tokens, I got rid of Mecha Phantom Beast Dracossack and went for Evilswarm Ophion. She couldn’t come back after that!

Age: 25

Hometown: Texas, USA

Occupation: Project Manager

Deck you played this weekend:
Geargia – to be honest, I haven’t been playing much over the past couple of months. So I instead wanted to play something that I felt confident with and that could beat the popular Decks.

Previous accomplishments:
I have 7 Tops including a 7th place at the 2011 World Championship Qualifier

What was your highlight of 2013?
This tournament! It’s been a lot of fun to come over here with my wife and enjoy a vacation in Italy together.

Why should we run a YCS in your hometown?
Because Dallas is pretty big. We’ll have a big attendance for certain!

What was your best play all weekend?
With this Deck, you tend to make the same plays over and over again. In my last round, I went for Gear Gigant X, Karakuri Shogun mdl 00 "Burei", Karakuri Steel Shogun mdl 00x "Bureido", Stardust Dragon, I then flipped his face-down monster, attacked with Stardust Dragon and that together with the damage from the other attacks was enough to secure my spot in the Top 8!

Yet another German Duelist: Konrad Grünewald!

Yet another German Duelist: Konrad Grünewald!

Age: 18

Hometown: Karlsruhe, Germany

Occupation: Pupil

Deck you played this weekend:
Dragon Ruler with some unique techs – I don’t like the Deck too much, but I still think it’s the strongest Deck in the field, putting everything else behind.

Previous accomplishments:
3rd place YCS Leipzig
Top 8 German Nationals 2011
Top 16 German Nationals 2012

What was your highlight of 2013?
Oh, wow, you’re really putting me on the spot here; I can’t come up with anything from the top of my head.

Why should we run a YCS in your hometown?
Karlsruhe is a beautiful city and since it would be a German YCS, we would have a huge attendance!

What was your best play all weekend?
My opponent had a face-down Spell or Trap Card and Red Dragon Archfiend. I Summoned Redox, Dragon Ruler of Boulders, he discarded Maxx "C", I Summoned Dragunity Corsesca, went for Colossal Fighter and a little later, he was Deck out!
