Welcome to Day 1!

You may be forgiven for thinking the biggest competition of this weekend is taking place in Brazil. It is a popular misconception since – as anyone in the know will tell you – all the action over the next two days will be taking place here in the Passenger Terminal, Amsterdam. It’s Saturday morning and the judges and staff have been working crazy hours to get the venue ready for the European calendar’s most premium Yu-Gi-Oh! event – the WCQ: European Championship 2014.

Duelists are flocking in their hundreds to register for the tournament. Previous qualification is needed and therefore strict ID checks are in place before players can hand in their Deck list and receive their participation prizes: some exclusive purple sleeves, a badge with the event name on it and a Guardian-themed Game Mat (which looks really awesome).

We are approaching 1000 players as I type this and looking forward to a day full of great plays, surprising Deck choices and underdog victories – not dissimilar in style to the other tournament happening across the globe.

Since we are in the Netherlands it would be rude not to wish them luck for their match against Mexico (especially since there are no Mexicans here) – although I’m not sure that Duelists from other countries will grant them any kind of advantage as every nation tries to take the title back home with them.

Today there will be nine rounds of Swiss. Stay tuned![nbsp]
