Welcome to Madrid!

Hello and welcome to Madrid! This weekend marks the highpoint in the European TCG calendar, as hundreds of Duelists from over 20 countries compete for one of 4 exclusive spots at the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship in Amsterdam next month.

Everybody competing this weekend has already taken part in Regional and National Championships in their home countries and earned their place at these tables, so the standard of play here will be very high indeed. On top of that we also have 25 Duelists who have already become champions in their homelands. These National Champions are the best of the best, representing their countries here in Madrid and we’ll be checking up with them over the course of the weekend to see how they get on.

More prize cards than ever before.

It’s usually at around this time of year that we see the strongest Decks and strategies make their way to the top tables as well. The buzz around the tournament floor today is all about Doppel Junk and other variants of Tengu Plant which can Summon [tghl] with ease, using its effect to draw several cards per Duel. Six Samurai is also a popular choice here, with some Duelists using cards like [dim fiss] to take on the wide variety of Decks that make use of the Graveyard. Let’s not rule out the other Decks that have been popular over the past few months either; Fabled Synchro won the Italian National Championship, Karakuri were victorious in Germany, Gravekeepers in the Netherlands and WATER Synchro was the top Deck in Israel. We’ve also got Agents, Infernities, X-Sabers and all sorts of other tricks up Duelists’ sleeves so expect a lot of interesting matchups as the tournament progresses!

While Duelists here in Madrid are competing for 4 World Championship spots, there’s 6 more invites ready to be given out at the North American World Championship Qualifier, which is also taking place this weekend! This is the first time that the 2 biggest WCQ events of the year are held on the very same weekend. Registration is almost completed here in Madrid though, and the first round will start soon, so get ready for a monumental weekend of Dueling action!
