World Championship Points Play-Off: Duelist Profiles

28.06.2019 | 16:56 |

Ladies and Gentleman, boys and girls at home, we would like to present you the Top 8 Duelists during the 2018/19 season. These Duelists fought hard to get where they are now. They played tons of events to earn enough points to take port in this Play-Off. In the end it was really close between the 1st and 2nd seed and 8th and 9th place. Dinh-Kha Bui sneeked into the Play-Offs by becoming 8th and knocking Thomas Rose out of the race. However, all of the grinded the whole year long and their success is well-deserved! Check out their profiles.

Sebastien Ma

Name: Sebastien Ma
Age: 23
Country: France, Paris
How do you feel right now? I feel stressed out. I’m tired and didn’t sleep a lot prior to the match. And since this is a very important match, I’m very excited.
What Deck are you playing today? Sky Striker, I‘ve been playing the Deck all season long and I feel like it is the most versatile Deck.
How do you feel about the Playoff? I started early on last year to collect points and it was my goal to go to worlds.
Final Words? Yu-Gi-Oh!

Dinh-Kha Bui

Name: Dinh-Kha Bui
Age: 23
Country: Germany, Berlin
How do you feel right now? I feel excited, because it is a decisive game and there is a lot on the line for me. I wasn’t chasing worlds right from the beginning. But after a few good results at previous YCSs and good results at regionals I was motivated to get more points and eventually go to Worlds. In the end I was lucky to be 8th .
What Deck are you playing today? Crusadia Danger Thunder Dragon – it is the Deck that I was most familiar with and I didn’t have time to test a lot. So stuck with it.
How do you feel about the Playoff? I feel like it’s a great idea but losing Round 1 sucks.
Final Words? Shoutouts to my team Seventh Sense, BB-Land Berlin and especially to Chung, Oz, Jack, Rasmus and Thomas Rose, who would have deserved to be here as well.

Raphael Neven

Name: Raphael Neven
Age: 21
Country: The Netherlands
How do you feel right now? Very nervous, there is a lot at stake right now. I worked the whole year for this and the first match is so important.
What Deck are you playing today? Thunder Dragon, I think it is the most powerful Deck and for an event like this I feel like it’s the best choice.
How do you feel about the Playoff? I like it, because it rewards good and consistent players. On the other hand a single match decides my faith. I cannot imagine that this was the intention of the whole thing
Final Words? Shoutouts to Team ARG, all my friends who supported me on my journey, my family and our sponsors.

Joshua Schmidt

Name: Joshua Schmidt
Age: 23
Country: Germany
How do you feel right now? Now I’m fine, it was so important to win the first match due to the way the playoffs are designed.
What Deck are you playing today? Crusadia Guardragon Danger, it is a Deck that I wouldn’t run in the long event like Euros. I built the Deck to beat Striker. Against all the other Decks it’s still strong enough to fight through handtraps.
How do you feel about the Playoff? The points system is a lot better now, other nations are allowed to take part in the race as well. I don’t like that it’s single Elimination, but I guess it will improve over the years.
Final Words? Shoutouts to my girlfriend, my family and my team and everybody that helped me playtest.

Paul Schuffenecker

Name: Paul Schuffenecker
Age: 30
Country: France
How do you feel right now? I’m very disappointed because I lost my first match against Joshua Schmidt and my dreams of going to worlds are shattered. I made a big mistake in Game 3 and couldn’t recover.
What Deck are you playing today? Salamangreat! I chose it, because I built it to play against Sky Striker and Thunder Dragon. It is geared towards winning Game 1.
How do you feel about the Playoff? When I topped Utrecht in 2018 I noticed that I earned a lot of points and I decided to go accept the challenge. After the system changed, I kept on. I feel like the system is unfortunate. After grinding for points the whole year long, one loss means elimination. I wish it was different.
Final Words? Shoutouts to my Team Bendo Cards Player (BCP), to my family and all the people who supported me.

Jake Quinsee

Name: Jake Quinsee
Age: 26
Country: The UK
How do you feel right now? It feels great to be here! That’s what I’ve been working for the whole year long. My goal was to go to Worlds at least once in my Yu-Gi-Oh! career.
What Deck are you playing today? Danger Crusadia – I built it especially for this event. I was expecting different match-ups like Sky Striker. If I knew I would have made a few changes to the Deck.
How do you feel about the Playoff? From a viewer’s perspective I feel like it is a good system. From my point it feels a little unfair to have only single elimination. I’ve been hustling for points since September 2018 and one loss will mean I’m out. If you asked me, I would let them play everyone against everyone and then top 4. Then you have proved yourself to be the best in Europe.
Final Words? Shoutouts to everyone that supported me from the start to now. I really appreciate it. I have a lot of great friends in the game and I don’t think that I would be here without them.

Jonas Koschel

Name: Jonas Koschel
Age: 21
Country: Germany, Bochum
How do you feel right now? I’m excited! I was sick the whole week long and now I’m very happy to be here. If it wasn’t for the playoffs, I guess, I wouldn’t be here. I know it was the worst time of the year to get sick, but it is what it is.
What Deck are you playing today? Thunder Dragon – I think it is the best choice for a short event like this. It is not as consistent as Sky Striker for example, but I feel like it was the best choice for this event.
How do you feel about the Playoff? I like it a lot. It’s another chance to go to Worlds and now there is a chance for the smaller countries as well. Prize Support is great! But I would love to see Double Elimination the next time.
Final Words? I want to say thanks to my mom for taking care of me. I wouldn’t be here without you!

Adrian Dursun

Name: Adrian Dursun
Age: 22
Country: Germany
How do you feel right now? I feel fit, I had enough sleep and I’m looking forward to my Top 8 match. Actually, I’m quite calm and relaxed.
What Deck are you playing today? Sky Striker, it’s the Deck that I’m most comfortable with. I was considering a change, but I was afraid to lose my confidence.
How do you feel about the Playoff? The new system is a lot better than last year. It would be great to see the 1st place to receive an invite to worlds without having to go through the playoffs. I feel like that’s the right reward for the effort the 1st place put in.
Final Words? Shoutouts to my girlfriend, my brother and my team.

Best of luck to all of you and may the best Duelist win!
