YCS Sydney – Top 8 Duelist Profiles

15.01.2017 | 11:45 |

We’ve whittled down the competition from just over 1000 Duelists down to the final 8, who are battling it out right now! We got a chance to talk to each of them before they began their Top 8 rounds. Here’s a bit of info about each of our strongest competitors!

Top 8 Bohdan

Name: Bohdan Temnyk

Age: 24

Location: Glenmore Park, NSW

What Deck are you playing today?

I’m playing Metalfoes, the “Billy Brake Special” version. Every other Deck has some glaring flaws, except for Metalfoes. It could do everything I wanted it to, and it had versatile Side Deck cards which made it the best choice.

Did you have any tech cards or cards that really helped you throughout the day?

I think Holding Legs against the Paleozoic Deck is very underrated. I was also playing 3 Dimensional Barrier and 1 Vanity's Emptiness, which were very important as not many people were playing Traps, and they were also good in the mirror.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Definitely the new set, Raging Tempest. Exploring the new cards and trying them in new events will be fun. YCS Prague looks exciting too, so I may be going there as well!

Anything else you’d like to add?

Shoutout to Chris Gerring, James White and all my friends for their support, also specifically Cameron Neal and Billy Brake for their help with the Deck!

Top 8 Mark

Name: Mark Key

Age: 22

Location: Adelaide, SA

What Deck are you playing today?

Paleozoic Frogs. I haven’t played a major event for a while, but I decided to pick up Paleozoic Frogs to learn for the event. I didn’t have time to learn Metalfoes, but I learnt the matchup which helped a lot. I’m a big fan of Frogs too, and Toadally Awesome is, well, awesome!

Did you have any tech cards or cards that really helped you throughout the day?

A lot of people said Breakthrough Skill is bad but I played 1 copy. It was good against ABC and can be milled easily by Paleozoic Marrella. Storming Mirror Force was amazing too. I used it against Cairngorgon, Antiluminescent Knight, which is strong against Paleo so it helped to have an easy out to that. I am also siding Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju and System Down, and you can grab Gameciel back with Toadally Awesome when it’s sent to the Graveyard. Sky Cavalry Centaurea is also good to bounce my Gameciel back to my hand as well.

What are you looking forward to this year?

I wanted to get back into Yu-Gi-Oh! competitively, so the events this year will be exciting.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Shoutout to Joe and Wade, they’re the two who helped me build the Deck, and without them I wouldn’t be here today.

Top 8 Edmund

Name: Edmund Alarca

Age: 20

Location: Gosford, NSW

What Deck are you playing today?

I’m playing the WATER Deck. I’ve played in the past and I really enjoyed it. I played ABC this format but it wasn’t working for me, so I decided to play this Deck since it had good plays going first and second.

Did you have any tech cards or cards that really helped you throughout the day?

I used 3 Forbidden Chalice in the Main. It’s great going first so that you can Set it against Abyss Dweller. The Deck loses hard to Abyss Dweller so it’s great to have an out to it.

What are you looking forward to this year?

I’m just looking forward to keep playing local and regional events, nothing too serious!

Anything else you’d like to add?

Just wanted to say that it’s been a great weekend here at the YCS!

Top 8 Michael

Name: Michael Della-Ca

Age: 28

Location: Newcastle, NSW

What Deck are you playing today?

I’m playing a standard ABC Deck, with some Traps. A lot of people were removing their Main Deck backrow hate, so I think I made a good meta call. The Brilliant Fusion version had more chance of bricking so I chose not to play that version.

Did you have any tech cards or cards that really helped you throughout the day?

Main Deck Anti-Spell Fragrance. Dimension Barrier was the biggest help throughout the day, but it’s a really unfair card.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Nationals and Oceanics for sure. I may go to America for one of their YCS events too.

Anything else you’d like to add?

The event has been great and the coverage has been awesome!

Top 8 Luke

Name: Luke Campisi

Age: 22

Location: Glenmore Park, NSW

What Deck are you playing today?

Metalfoes, with Blackwing - Gofu the Vague Shadow and Majespecters. There were 2 Decks I could’ve pick, but my friends said “pick this one” so I did!

Did you have any tech cards or cards that really helped you throughout the day?

D.D. Crow put in a lot of work against ABC.

What are you looking forward to this year?

Right now I’m just stoked that I made top 8 in my first YCS!

Anything else you’d like to add?

Shoutout to all my friends, and to Bohdan for playtesting with me for days. Also, shoutout to Gametraders Penrith my local store!

Top 8 Michael

Name: Michael Duke

Age: 22

Location: Campbelltown, NSW

What Deck are you playing today?

Metalfoes Majespecters. I played because it’s a Pendulum Deck, so it can do a lot on each turn. It’s also a great Deck when you go second.

Did you have any tech cards or cards that really helped you throughout the day?

Retaliating "C" for the mirror match, to banish their Metalfoes Fusion and their materials. It can also search Maxx "C"! It’s part of the reason why I was able to win my Top 16 match.

What are you looking forward to this year?

The new Zoodiac cards in Raging Tempest.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Shoutout to all the players at Gametraders MacArthur, my local store!

Top 8 Cameron

Name: Cameron Nyhuis

Age: 21

Location: Melbourne VIC

What Deck are you playing today?

I’m playing Metalfoes Yang Zing, because I play a lot of Synchro Decks. I qualified my last regional playing Blackwings. For this event, I wanted a Deck that was great first turn, but also had good OTK potential.

What are you looking forward to this year?

The new Forbidden & Limited List, might like to see a change to Toadally Awesome and Speedroid Terrortop. Also Foolish Burial with Belongings in Raging Tempest.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Don’t stop believing!

Top 8 Lee

Name: Lee Li

Age: 24

Location: China

What Deck are you playing today?

I’m playing an ABC Deck. It’s consistent, and with my build, I can get advantage even if I go second.

Did you have any tech cards or cards that really helped you throughout the day?

Cosmic Cyclone. It was great against Metalfoes and in the mirror match.

What are you looking forward to this year?

I’m looking forward to graduating from my master degree!

Anything else you’d like to add?

Thanks to my Melbourne YGO community and to all my friends!
